Hundreds of Residents Assail Tax for Improvement of Parks

Hundreds of homeowners from the harbor area to the San Fernando Valley packed the chambers of the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday to protest a proposed assessment on the November ballot that would raise $25 million a year for parks improvements.

Members of the boisterous crowd--drawn not by lobbyists, activists or organizers but outrage over notices of the assessment that had recently been received in the mail--decried ever-rising tax burdens and said they do not use parks because they are not safe. In all, 62 people approached the podium during the two-hour hearing.

“My daughter has never been in the parks in my city. That’s because I fear, not only for my daughter’s life, but for my life,” Arleta resident Janna Brewer said as she stood at the microphone, hoisting 3 1/2-year-old Jordan on her hip.
