Attorneys for Moore Contend Black Leaders Were Targeted

Share

Attorneys for former Compton City Councilwoman Patricia Moore argued Thursday that Compton and its black leaders were singled out for prosecution while the federal government failed to investigate other cities.

“Compton was targeted,” said Moore attorney Cheryl Turner. “This would not have been done in Santa Monica, Santa Barbara or Newport Beach. But it was done in Compton and that’s what’s so wrong about it.”

Moore’s attorneys are trying to get extortion and tax evasion charges against their client dropped.

They plan to submit a tape from the television news program “60 Minutes” about alleged corruption at the Bell Gardens Bicycle Club, where they claim prosecutors failed to bring charges against the white general manager, George Hardie.

Assistant U.S. Atty. Mary Andrues said the only evidence to back up Moore’s claims is her “fabricated, self-serving declarations.”

Moore was indicted for allegedly taking more than $62,000 in bribes from two companies hoping to do business in Compton.
