*** The Beastie Boys, “The In Sound From Way Out,” Capitol. You might have anticipated this bizarre instrumental novelty when “Ill Communication” hit the racks. Trading their incomparable hip for retro hep (even its art mimics ‘50s jazz packaging), the Beasties come up with a totally enjoyable work of sonic beatness that will nonetheless baffle fans of “Check Your Head,” who’ll wonder why the Boys have chosen wordless lounge-lizard shtick over sample-heavy innovation.

Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
