A Superior Court judge Friday tentatively set a Sept. 16 trial date for Assemblyman Scott Baugh’s chief of staff, who has been accused of voting fraud in her boss’s election.

Maureen Werft, Baugh’s top aide, has pleaded not guilty to two felony charges that she lied on her ballot application and then voted in Baugh’s district even though she did not live there.

Doug Otto, Werft’s attorney, has indicated that before the trial begins he intends to file several motions challenging the merit of the charges. Superior Court Judge James L. Smith said Friday that those motions will be heard July 19.

Werft was one of several people charged with misconduct in connection with Baugh’s election to the 67th Assembly District seat Nov. 28.

Baugh (R-Huntington Beach) is awaiting trial on charges of campaign finance violations.
