From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Defying protesters who claim his conservative stands undermine his fellow blacks, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas got a standing ovation at Central High School in the predominantly black Washington suburb of Seat Pleasant, Md. About 50 demonstrators gathered outside. The PTA of the Thomas G. Pullen Creative and Performing Arts School in Landover had invited him, but Prince George’s County Schools Supt. Jerome Clark withdrew the invitation after three black school board members threatened to protest. The board overruled Clark.
