Olympic Age: Laszlo Tabori was the third man in the world to run a mile in less than four minutes. Now, the Burbank shoe shop owner and Hungarian sports Hall of Famer is among 23 former Olympians to be honored Thursday by the L.A. Department on Aging. . . . “This is a way to let seniors know they are valued,” said organizer Sharon Yancey. Tabori ran the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races in the 1956 Games.

In the Hole: Subway construction critic Tom Hayden had a new target Tuesday. He sent an angry letter to City Atty. James K. Hahn complaining of “disappointment” over the decision not to prosecute tunneling contractor SKK over safety concerns that arose when a sinkhole ate a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard last year. . . . Norm Hutchins, the SKK superintendent accused by state safety officials of putting workers in danger, then lived in Burbank. He now heads the excavation of the first highway tunnel in Arkansas.

Match Point: Dylan Mann of Taft High, left, and Nick Varvais of Royal High are a pair of aces on the tennis court, and now they’re teamed up as The Times Valley Edition’s Players of the Year (C6). . . . Both are top-10 seeds in the Southern California Tennis Assn., and helped their teams to the playoffs. Next year, Mann will play for Florida, Varvais for UC Irvine.

Holy Smoke: Councilman Marvin Braude is smokin’ mad again. On Thursday, the anti-smoking advocate plans to urge city transportation commissioners to ban 3-D billboards from the tops of taxi cabs. . . . One cigarette brand has placed a model of a smoker on cabs to show the lengths to which people will go to puff. Braude said the ad “mocks legislative efforts” to block smoking in enclosed places.
