NIGERIA : Protests of Annulled Election Are Banned

Nigerian authorities banned meetings, political rallies and demonstrations ahead of today’s anniversary of an annulled 1993 presidential vote that some activists have said they would mark with protests. Police in western Nigeria--the bastion of the opposition and home region of the presumed winner of the annulled vote, Moshood K. O. Abiola--have warned that they will crack down on protesters. Nigeria has been in turmoil since the annulment of the election.
