Report Says 600,000 Women Die Annually in Childbirth, Pregnancy

A new report from the United Nations Children’s Fund indicates that almost 600,000 women die in childbirth and pregnancy each year. For every woman who dies, 30 more suffer serious pregnancy-related injuries, according to the report, which provides the first new data in 10 years.
One in every 13 women in sub-Saharan Africa dies of maternal causes, as does one in 35 women in South Asia. In contrast, the figures are one woman in 3,200 for Western Europe, one in 3,300 in the United States and one in 7,300 in Canada.
