Summer begins precisely at 7:24 p.m. on Wednesday. This is the moment when the Northern Hemisphere is most directly oriented toward the sun. It also marks the sun’s northernmost rising and setting points on the horizon (the sun rises 29 degrees north of due east and sets 29 degrees north of due west as seen from Los Angeles), and it marks the sun’s highest altitude above the southern horizon (79 degrees at local noon at the latitude of Los Angeles).
