NIGERIA : Rain, Police Prevent Threatened Protests

Armed soldiers and police combined with a heavy rain to deter protests on the third anniversary of Nigeria’s aborted presidential election. Opposition groups threatened marches and strikes to protest the annulment of the June 12, 1993, vote, but as in the past, police and soldiers in armored personnel carriers blanketed major intersections and guarded schools and government buildings to prevent unrest.
