Lott Joins Finance Panel

WASHINGTON — A day after being elected to lead the Senate, Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) was named to the sought-after Finance Committee on Thursday, taking the vacancy created when Bob Dole resigned.
The panel is one of Congress’ most influential, having authority over taxes, trade, health programs and Social Security. Because of its power, its members traditionally attract large amounts of campaign contributions.
