Korenstein to Address School Improvements

Share

School board member Julie Korenstein will speak about fixing Valley schools Wednesday night at a community meeting sponsored by the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn.

Korenstein, who has represented parts of the San Fernando Valley since 1987, will discuss how to physically and educationally bolster Valley schools, with an emphasis on a $2.4-billion bond measure that the board expects to put on the November ballot. The bond measure would cover the building of new schools, adding more computers and beefing up security at schools districtwide.

Korenstein is also expected to discuss efforts to break up the massive Los Angeles Unified School District.

“Whether or not residents have schoolchildren, the quality of local schools is extremely important to our community,” homeowner activist Richard H. Close said. “There is a universal agreement that schools need to be fixed. . . . We need to know what is being done.”

Also scheduled for the community meeting is a discussion on the status of the much-touted bill that would ease Valley secession from the rest of the city.

Wednesday’s meeting will begin at 8 p.m. at the Sherman Oaks Glendale Federal Bank, 13300 Ventura Blvd.
