Students at St. Irenaeus School have spelled their way toward making one of the largest donations to the Cypress Police Department’s anti-drug program.

Students in every grade at the parochial school raised $2,500 for the city’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE, program by gathering pledges for a spelling contest. Their efforts were praised at a City Council meeting by city officials and Police Chief Daryl Wicker.

“We appreciate it more than you’ll ever know,” Wicker told Principal Beverly Harrison and student representatives Melissa Mecija and Nicole Gingras, both 13. Wicker said the donation is one of the largest ever given to the DARE fund.
