With Fans Like These, Dodgers Are in Trouble

Share

The Dodger lineup is so flat and uninspired, they make a single and walk look like a rally. It appears the guaranteed, megabuck contracts have sucked the enthusiasm out of the team.

These players say they are a better team than their record indicates. No, they’re not. It’s mid-June. The good teams have good records. The so-so teams have so-so records.

Can’t someone persuade the Dodgers to go on strike, so some replacement players with zest for the game can be brought in?

Hello! Am I missing something?

The headline in “Baseball Daily Report” on June 11 proclaims “Candiotti Puts Team Ahead of Pride” as he consents to pitch long relief so Ramon Martinez, recovering from flu, can be eased back into the rotation.

Is Candiotti to be praised for relinquishing his usual starting role to pitch relief? Is he making some grand sacrifice? How long did he have to think about this before he gave this consent for the good of the team?

Funny, I thought that baseball was a team sport. I thought that Candiotti was one valuable member of this team. I thought that the manager--in this case, Tom Lasorda--runs the team, and he tells the players when they play and where they play and what their role is.

I can’t understand why fans are confused about the Dodgers’ offense. The answer is obvious. They have changed the lineup, players, coaches and practice and still don’t get it. Who is still there? Tommy Lasorda.

He is past his prime and they will never win again with him. Dodger baseball is boring. Bring in an aggressive baseball man from outside the organization, Peter O’Malley, and you will again be on top.

Regarding the Dodgers’ “lack of chemistry,” I think Eric Karros is right on the money. The name of the game is the will to win. A case in point: the 1986 Mets, who fought each other off the field all season long, only to win the World Series.
