2nd Amendment
The Platform (Commentary, June 11) misrepresented our position on gun control. In fact, the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California believes that the 2nd Amendment was not intended as a gun license for the entire American populace. In our public education efforts on this issue we state that the 2nd Amendment, as interpreted by the courts for more than a century, does not impede rational and effective gun control.
The ACLU of Southern California believes that the weight of historical and legal scholarship indicates that the 2nd Amendment guarantees that states may maintain a well-regulated, armed militia.
The ACLU of Southern California advocates gun control and an accurate understanding of the 2nd Amendment. We have a brochure on the 2nd Amendment that explains this position and is available to the public.
