Jewelry Store Clerk Foils Thieves

Share

Seven unarmed would-be jewelry thieves tried to snatch $2 million worth of diamonds from a Beverly Hills store but were thwarted, authorities said Sunday.

The group entered 14 Karat Ltd. on Beverly Boulevard on Saturday afternoon and split into small groups to distract the sales people, said Sgt. Richard Brown of the Beverly Hills Police Department. The ones not being helped, Brown said, walked behind the counter and tried to grab some trays of loose diamonds.

A saleswoman saw the maneuver and alerted the store’s security force, which held the group until police arrived.

Each of the seven were arrested on suspicion of grand theft and commercial burglary and were being held Sunday in lieu of $2-million bail.
