Garrison Lawsuit Against Studios Advances: A lawsuit brought by the heirs of the late New Orleans district attorney, Jim Garrison, seeking to challenge Hollywood’s system of accounting and sharing profits was certified as a class action by U.S. District Judge Robert Takasugi in Los Angeles. Garrison’s heirs brought the lawsuit after Garrison’s investigations into the assassination of President Kennedy became the basis of Oliver Stone’s “JFK” at Warner Bros. Although Takasugi gave the lawsuit class-action status, it was only for alleged antitrust allegations, not breach of contract counts. “This is a great win for the people in the industry who didn’t otherwise have a voice,” said plaintiffs’ attorney Thomas Girardi. But Frank Rothman, an attorney for Twentieth Century Fox and a former studio chief, said his client will challenge the ruling, and “we’ll be winning on appeal.”
