Hazmobile Plans Stop for Waste Disposal

Share

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Pacoima-area residents can safely and legally get rid of used motor oil, paint, household cleaners, medicines, garden chemicals and other dangerous toxic wastes that have accumulated over the years under the sink, in the shed or in the garage.

The city’s mobile hazardous waste disposal unit, called the Hazmobile, will make a three-day stop in Pacoima. Disposal is by appointment only: Residents must call the city of Los Angeles’ Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at 1-800-98-TOXIC to schedule a visit.

To dispose of bulky items like air-conditioners or washing machines, residents can call 1-800-773-CITY for separate pickup. No bulky items will be accepted at the hazardous waste pickup.

Hotline operators will not reveal the location of the drop-off site until an appointment has been scheduled. The idea is to regulate the number of people dropping materials off and to prevent lines.

The Hazmobile will receive wastes between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. only. The pickup was arranged at the request of leaders from the Northeast Community Improvement Assn.

As much waste as possible will be recycled, said David Mays, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works. Latex paints can be recycled and used in city anti-graffiti programs. Motor oil can be recycled and used in city vehicles. Other chemicals will be disposed of at toxic waste landfills.

A few do’s and don’ts from the city Bureau of Sanitation:

It is illegal to transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste. Waste from businesses will not be accepted. People must remain inside their vehicles after entering the drop-off area. Chemical and toxic products should be kept inside their original containers, which should be leak-proof. No tires, radioactive materials, compressed gas, infectious waste, explosives or ammunition will be accepted.
