Too Much Rejection

It’s a shame Julie Andrews felt compelled to turn down her Tony Award nomination for best actress in the musical comedy “Victor/Victoria” because the rest of the show was ignored (Morning Report, May 9).

Yes, the cast is great.

Yes, the production is sleek and flashy.

But the audiences love Julie and want to see her talents recognized. They feel hurt and disappointed when honors are not acknowledged (witness the moans that went up from the audience when she announced she would not accept the nomination).

The trend toward rejecting awards for various reasons is silly. Performers are not politicians, they are entertainers. Wouldn’t a more positive reaction be to accept nominations and awards with gratitude, and while doing so, give credit to those you think deserve it? Then everyone is happy--audiences, performers who have been acknowledged for their talent and those who may have--fairly or unfairly--been rebuffed.
