OLYMPIC REPORT / 27 DAYS TO THE GAMES
Lisa Fernandez and Michele Granger pitched no-hitters as the U.S. Olympic softball team blanked the New England All-Stars twice at Worcester, Mass.
Fernandez, a former UCLA standout, struck out all 15 batters she faced in the 8-0 victory in the first game. Granger struck out 17 of the 18 batters she faced in the 9-0 victory in the second game.
“We haven’t reached our peak,” Olympic softball Coach Ralph Raymond said. “I’m hoping to put it all together in the next couple of weeks.”
Despite the 17 runs scored Friday, Raymond said his offense still needs to get on track.
“It’s like night and day,” Raymond said. “If we could bottle [our hitting], we would be millionaires.”
Kim Maher was the hitting star of the second game. She hit a three-run homer in the third inning and a three-run homer in the sixth. Maher leads the team with 47 RBIs and is second in home runs to Sheila Cornell, who leads with 10.
