3 on Board Wisely Back Term Limits

Share

We congratulate the three Orange County supervisors who voted to put term limits for their seats on the ballot in the November election. Recent history dictates the need for a much closer look at those who seek to serve on the board.

Opponents of term limits love to say term limits are not necessary and the ballot box is all we need. Not exactly! An incumbent has a huge advantage over a potential challenger. First, there is name identity built from years of media exposure. Second, the incumbent usually has a war chest often exceeding $200,000 collected in fund-raisers during his or her term.

An excellent candidate, with new energy and ideas, looks at the playing field and decides the hurdles are too high and we get more of the same.

I predict the voters of Orange County will vote for a two-term limit and it should be effective starting January 1997.
