Air New Zealand pilots on international flights have been granted permission to nap in the cockpit, startling even the pilot’s union.

The airline said there were numerous cases of “unofficial and uncontrolled” cockpit napping on all airlines and Air New Zealand wanted to allow the crew to sleep on a more controlled basis.

Pilots will be allowed one 30-minute nap on flights longer than three hours.

Even though at least one, and often two pilots would be awake at all times, the Airline Pilots’ Assn. expressed concerns about safety.
