County Grants Dump an Operating Permit
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors granted Browning-Ferris Industries on Tuesday an operating permit to open Sunshine Canyon landfill.
Although the dump, scheduled to open in mid-July, has long been a controversial issue, the board approved the operating permit without discussion. The vote was 4 to 0.
Supervisor Mike Antonovich, the area’s representative and a longtime opponent of the dump, abstained from the vote.
The permit requires that Browning-Ferris comply with the county’s waste management rules, indemnifies the county against damages that might result from the landfill, arranges for Browning-Ferris to buy open space area in nearby Bee Canyon and requires that Browning-Ferris reimburse the county for various inspection expenses.
The Board of Supervisors voted to open the county portion of Sunshine Canyon in 1993, not long after the city of Los Angeles voted to shut down the city half of the dump.
Browning-Ferris hopes to win the city of Los Angeles’ approval to reopen the city portion by the end of the year.
