Leadership Program to Begin Next Month

“Leadership Anaheim,” an 11-month training program designed to develop community leaders and promote civic unity, will begin its inaugural class on July 11.

Councilman Bob Zemel, the program founder and chairman, said the idea is to bring together a cross section of people who live or work in Anaheim and want to become involved in shaping the community’s future.

“This is not about political partisanship,” Zemel said. “It’s strictly about setting a curriculum that will allow people to emerge as leaders.”

Learning about the inner workings of municipal government will be an asset for people interested in joining Anaheim’s various boards and commissions, Zemel said. “But it’s also going to help the nonprofit philanthropic organizations learn how to coexist and take advantage of opportunities in the city.”

Topics of the monthly training sessions will include local government, tourism, conventions, public safety, transportation, education, economic development, planning, health services, cultural arts and recreation.

“Leadership Anaheim” executive director Tim Geddes said the community-based program will accept 25 to 30 participants.

Tuition is $1,200 per person, and financial assistance is available.
