National League Not Investigating Schott

The National League continues to monitor the Cincinnati Reds’ operation but is not investigating whether Marge Schott has violated terms of the agreement by which she bowed out of the team’s daily operation through 1998, said Ricky Clemons, a league spokesman.

The Dayton Daily News, quoting unnamed team employees, said Schott has been meddling in team affairs and that the league was investigating. Under terms of the June 12 agreement, controller John Allen is serving as the team’s chief executive for a period of up to 60 days while Schott and the league search for a mutually acceptable replacement through ’98.

The newspaper quoted an employee as saying that Schott on Tuesday was “. . . just on a rampage, just sticking her nose into what everybody was doing and wondering why she didn’t have any checks to sign.”

The agreement allows Schott access to all areas of Riverfront Stadium, including team offices. A club official contacted by The Times said Schott has taken advantage of that freedom and added, “There’s probably a fine line between meddling and curiosity as to what’s going on in various departments. Has she gone over the line? Each of us may view that differently.”
