Clinic Receives $100,000 Grant

The Huntington Beach Community Clinic, a nonprofit organization that provides low-cost medical services, has been awarded a $100,000 federal grant.

The City Council voted earlier this month to appropriate the money to the operation, which had requested funding to buy a computer and telephone system for its new facility, set to open Tuesday at 8041 Newman Ave.

Jackie Cherewick, executive director, said the money will pay for “equipment that we desperately need to serve our patients.”

The clinic, which has more than 12,000 patients on its rolls, is also set to receive $35,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for fiscal 1996-97. That money will be used for salaries and facility costs, Cherewick said.

The clinic has been serving Huntington Beach and surrounding communities for 25 years. It offers medical services to low-income people and those without insurance. About half of the clinic’s patients are Huntington Beach residents, officials said.
