A nonprofit organization’s request to build a shelter for the homeless at its headquarters on Jackson Street has been granted by the Orange County Planning Commission.

Shelter for the Homeless plans to transform an old warehouse behind its offices into a 19-room facility that would provide housing for homeless persons and staff.

Construction of the project is expected to begin this fall.

The shelter’s rooms are to be furnished with beds, microwaves, small refrigerators and bathrooms.

Occupants will be required to participate in training programs to help them get jobs and save money to become self-sufficient, said Jim Miller, the organization’s president.

The shelter will be at 15161 Jackson St. between McFadden and Bolsa avenues.

Shelter for the Homeless operates 20 facilities for the homeless in Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
