Students Produce Book on Recycling Motor Oil

Students at Inglewood High School have developed a bilingual coloring book to teach children from kindergarten through fourth grade about the importance of recycling used motor oil.

Improper disposal of oil has polluted many South Bay beaches.

The recently completed “Recycle Used Oil: Do the Right Thing” book was produced by students in the high school art class and features illustrations of a father teaching his son to take used oil to a recycling center. The pictures are accompanied by a story written in English and Spanish.

“So many people dump oil in the storm drains which runs directly to ocean and pollutes the beaches,” said Karen Gill, an environmental administrator with the Department of Public Works, which sponsored the program. “We wanted the kids to get the message out to people and also learn how this affects the environment.”

The coloring book will be distributed at Inglewood community events throughout the summer.

The project was funded by a state grant awarded to the city by the California Integrated Waste Management Board to encourage people to recycle oil.
