Air Expo to Include B-2 Bomber Flyover

The massive, black, bat-like B-2 Stealth bomber will make its first-ever Los Angeles flyover next weekend, as part of the Van Nuys Airport Aviation Expo ‘96, which runs July 13 and 14.

Built and assembled in the Southland, the B-2 is somewhat of an enigma, explained Stacy Geere, the airport spokeswoman. Everyone has heard of the bomber, but few have seen it.

“It is very rare to get the opportunity to view the B-2 in flight,” she said. “This is really the first opportunity L.A. residents have had to see the B-2 in the air. We’re extremely excited to have it.”

Beyond the B-2 flyover at 2:20 p.m. July 13, the two-day expo--which typically draws about 250,000 visitors--will include more than 50 military, vintage and commercial aircraft, she said. Among them will be the F-117A Stealth fighter, the B-1 bomber, the F-14 Tomcat and a vintage AT-6.

The air show, in its 33rd year at Van Nuys, also will include simulator rides, a radio-controlled model airplane show, dozens of exhibits, a skydiving exhibition by the Misty Blues all-woman diving team and parachuting demonstrations.

For the aeronautically disinclined, there will be line-dancing, live music and food.

“It’s the largest free family event in the Valley,” Geere said.

The Aviation Expo will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Van Nuys Airport. The pedestrian entrance is at 8030 Balboa Blvd. Off-site parking and shuttle service is also provided free at three locations. For event and parking information, call (818) 773-3293.
