House Roof Fire Blamed on Fireworks

A bottle rocket that touched off a July 4 fire on the shake shingle roof of a Camarillo house caused an estimated $60,000 in damage, authorities said Friday.

It’s not known who fired the rocket that landed on the two-story residence at 1074 Gemini Ave. shortly after 10 p.m., a Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish.

Fire officials say Thursday’s blaze was the 10th blamed on fireworks in the county since June 28. Eight burned only brush, though fireworks caused another structure fire June 30 in Westlake Village.

Fireworks are illegal everywhere in the county except Fillmore, where vendors do not sell rockets or other aerial fireworks.
