Libraries to Host Summer Storytelling

Share

San Fernando Valley libraries have scheduled children’s storytelling programs to help chase away summer boredom.

Individually, and as part of the Los Angeles Public Library’s “L.A. Kids Read!” program, the branches have devised free ways to entertain children.

Some upcoming events include “Weird and Wacky” story time at 2 p.m. Thursday at Porter Ranch Branch Library, 11371 Tampa Ave., in which children 3 and older will be read picture books about wild characters.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, children at the Platt Branch Library, 23600 Victory Blvd., Woodland Hills, will hear from Maya the Storyteller, who dresses in traditional African garb as she tells tales of Africa with words, songs and instruments.

Also on Saturday, at 1:30 p.m. the West Valley Branch Library, 19036 Vanowen St., Reseda, will host a puppet theater production of “Peter and the Wolf” and “The Great Big Enormous Turnip.”

In addition to the special events, every week most Valley libraries have free book discussions, drama performances, magic shows and craft sessions for children of all ages.

“L.A. Kids Read!” is a reading incentive program designed to spark an interest in books. Participants record the number of books they read over the summer and receive such prizes as book bags, puzzles and stickers for their efforts from the libraries.

All branch libraries have a schedule of the program’s events for children.
