Trustees Mull Post for Computer Consultant

To help train teachers and administrators to use computer programs, the school board tonight will consider creating a position for a computer consultant.

Paul Bewley, director of information technology for the Santa Ana Unified School District, said that employees must be self-taught or take outside classes, sometimes at their own expense.

Board member Robert W. Balen proposed hiring a consultant about one year ago and has voted against a number of computer purchases because he said the district lacked a coherent policy.

“We’re spending in excess of $1 million this year and next year to purchase computer equipment,” Balen said, “and we have no one being the traffic cop in the district to coordinate all that.”

Teachers and administrators would be able to learn programs for IBMs and IBM clones and Apple computers, Bewley said. The consultant also could teach district employees about the Internet and help coordinate the purchase and repair of computer programs.

The salary for the position would be $35,000 to $44,880.
