Leaking Drums Near Highway Are Removed

Three metal containers dumped alongside California 33 in Los Padres National Forest caused a minor stir Monday after forest rangers discovered two were leaking.

The Ventura County Hazardous Materials Team was called to inspect the leaking drums at 12:30 p.m. and discovered two 40-gallon drums that contained grease and a 55-gallon drum--which was not leaking--filled with a mixture of crankcase oil and water.

Authorities think the containers were recently dumped on the side of the road between Wheeler Hot Springs and Rose Valley. The metal drums were considered nonhazardous and were cleaned up by the Forest Service and Caltrans, authorities said.
