Holy Day

For adherents of the Bahai faith, today is one of the most important religious holidays of the year, commemorating the martyrdom of the Bab. The Bab, a young man considered the forerunner of the faith, was executed in Persia this day in 1850. . . . The holiday is one of nine on which Bahais are urged to stay home from work, said Barbara Cramer of Glendale, home of 64 registered Bahais.

New Ground

The Walt Disney Co. is branching out with non-theme park development projects like Celebration, a master-planned community in Florida with 8,000 homes, a school and offices (D1). . . . All homes will be wired with fiber optics--presumably to allow computer users to tap into Disney’s online sites more easily.

Online Campaign

Opponents of the Ahmanson Ranch development have taken their cause to the Internet. Cyber-surfers who stop at https://www.loop.com/~stopahmanson/index.htm will find landscape photos and dire warnings of environmental destruction put out by the Friends of Ahmanson Ranch. . . . Also available: a tour of the ranch and comments from elected officials.

Henry Chu

Henry Chu first joined the Los Angeles Times in 1990 and worked primarily out of the San Fernando Valley office before moving to the foreign staff in 1998. He served as bureau chief in Beijing from 1998 to 2003, Rio de Janeiro from 2004 to 2005, New Delhi from 2006 to 2008 and London from 2009 to 2014. He was a 2014-15 fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. From 2016-19 he was international editor at Variety magazine. A graduate of Harvard University, Chu returned to The Times in March 2020 as deputy news editor based in London. He left in 2024.
