Schools / Education news : District to Buy Land for New Campus
- Share via
Anticipating a surge in student enrollment during the next few years, Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s board of trustees has approved a plan to purchase 11 acres of land for a new campus.
The trustees recently authorized $7.1 million to buy the property at Newport Coast Drive and Ridge Park Road in Newport Beach. The money for both the land and the construction will be paid back by homeowners through a special tax assessment district.
The school district projects an enrollment increase of at least 1,000 students in the next five years, when families move into the southernmost areas of Newport Beach, where new homes are under construction.
Most existing schools are already near their enrollment capacity, officials said.
In addition to the Newport Beach school, which may open as soon as 1999 for 500 students, the district expects to use portable classrooms at several campuses.
