Thomas M. Volk, a former county harbor master, has been named interim director of the newly created Ventura County Harbor Department at Channel Islands Harbor, officials said Wednesday.

Volk’s appointment was announced by county Chief Administrative Officer Lin Koester.

“Tom has fine skills and great historical knowledge of this county and the harbor and parks in particular,” Koester said in a prepared statement.

Volk’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s degree in public administration. Since retiring from his job with the county’s General Services Agency in 1986, Volk has worked as a consultant who advises public and private agencies on park- and harbor-related issues.

The Board of Supervisors recently separated the Channel Islands Harbor from the county’s park system to give the harbor more autonomy and flexibility to make improvements so it can generate more revenue.
