Grant Given to Teach Job, Business Skills

The Ventura youth program Las Sonadoras has received a $7,000 grant to teach young women job and business skills.

The money, contributed through the private nonprofit Ventura County Community Foundation’s Women’s Legacy Fund, will be used to develop a marketing plan for a T-shirt silk-screening business. Formed in January, Las Sonadoras, which means the dreamers, is one of the city’s gang-prevention and intervention programs.

The idea is to teach 40 young women between the ages of 13 and 25 job and career development skills, said Roberta Payan, project coordinator.

“It’s jobs these kids need,” she said. “It’s marketable skills that will take them out of what they’re facing now.”

Profits from T-shirt sales will be reinvested to continue the program.

Although Las Sonadoras already has 20 businesswomen or organizations willing to mentor the participants or provide other assistance, more volunteers are needed. In addition, space is needed to operate the business, Payan said.
