GEORGIA : 2 Blacks Hail Wins in Redrawn Districts

Two black Democrats hailed their primary victories as blows against racism in districts that were redrawn under court order from majority black to mostly white. Rep. Cynthia McKinney won the primary in the 4th District, east of Atlanta, which is 32% black. Her old district was 60% black. She got 67% of the vote, while her closest rival, lawyer Comer Yates, who is white, got 23%. Rep. Sanford Bishop got 59% of the vote to defeat two white male Democrats in the 2nd District, in rural southwest Georgia, which is 35% black. Bishop’s old district was 52% black.
