It’s Full Speed Ahead for Lachemann

Speculation that Manager Marcel Lachemann’s job is in jeopardy will not affect the way he approaches his job, said Lachemann, whose brother, Rene, was fired by the Florida Marlins on Sunday.

“You go into this business with accountability, and I have no problem with that,” Lachemann said at Anaheim Stadium, where the Angels held a voluntary workout before flying to Seattle for a four-game series. “I won’t look over my shoulder. That’s not a good kind of pressure.

“If you’re scared or afraid of losing your job, you’re not going to operate with a clear mind, you’re not going to be aggressive. You’re going to play not to make mistakes, and that’s not what this job needs.”

Right fielder Tim Salmon, who sat out Sunday’s game against Oakland because of a strained muscle in his left forearm, said he felt great Wednesday and would be in the lineup tonight.

“It’s amazing that the All-Star break came just in time, because all I needed was some rest,” said Salmon, whose .293 average, 22 homers and 58 RBIs weren’t good enough to make the American League team. “The only thing I’m concerned about is, I’ve gone five days without swinging a bat. We’ll see how far I’ve regressed.”

Salmon expects to sit out a few games though. His wife, Marci, is expecting the couple’s second child July 21, and Salmon has received permission to leave the team for the delivery.
