Police Still Trying to Find Parents of Abandoned Boy

The identity of the little black-haired boy found Tuesday on a toy train engine trundling down Molino Avenue in Long Beach remains a mystery. Despite a Thursday news conference that broadcast his picture and his plight across Southern California, no relatives have come forward to claim the child.

The boy, believed to be between 2 and 3 years old, is staying in a foster home in the custody of the Department of Children’s Services until his parents are located. So far, all clues have led nowhere, said Crpl. Jay Fogg of the Long Beach Police Department.

“Our people are going nuts trying to find somebody who knows something,” he said, adding that police fielded numerous offers to care for the boy. The child appears to be in good health and shows no signs of abuse.

Wearing a blue “Bugle Boy Star Power” shirt, cutoff jeans and black sneakers with purple trim, the boy was picked up by officers Tuesday evening when neighborhood children called police after failing to find where the lone boy on the scooter lived.

The toddler is calm and mostly silent, voicing only “I want my mom,” said Fogg. Otherwise, he doesn’t appear to speak English and police have tried several Asian languages, Tagalog and Spanish, but none has provoked a response.
