State Hospital Panel Lacks Balance

Share

* After reading “Panel to Begin Deliberations on Future of State Hospital” (July 8), I am troubled by the imbalance of the panel, specifically its lack of experts on mental health situations in Ventura County.

I can hear in my mind the ultimate report from the panel: “The majority of this panel strongly recommends that the hospital is converted to a college. We envision a $300-million annual payroll for the college, plus increased real estate values in the city of Camarillo, with increased business activities in the same city.”

And, of course, Ventura County and the average citizen will assume an increased tax burden because of the new mental health crisis in our county. Something will have to be done with the mentally ill and developmentally disabled in our midst.
