Charges Filed Against Boy in Sex Video Case

Prosecutors said Friday they have filed charges against a 17-year-old Seal Beach boy who allegedly made a secret videotape of himself having consensual sex with a 14-year-old girl, and then showed it to friends at school.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Bryan Brown said Friday that confidentiality laws prohibited him from releasing any details on the nature of the charges against the minor, a Los Alamitos High School athlete.

But Brown confirmed that Deputy Dist. Atty. Nancy Du Pont filed the case Thursday.

The Seal Beach boy was not arrested but was suspended from school and is subject to expulsion, school officials have said.

Police said the boy hid the camera under some clothes before the Feb. 28 videotaping. The girl and her parents went to police May 3, after she heard from other students that the boy was showing the tape to friends on a hand-held video-camera monitor, Seal Beach Police Det. Bob Mullins said.

During the investigation, Mullins said the youth might have unlawfully recorded the encounter because he did not have the girl’s consent.
