Despite Changes, Lucero Sings It Down the Middle

In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Lucerito was one of Latin America’s most beloved child actresses, the embodiment of innocence, purity, beauty and humor. Then she grew up, changed her name to Lucero and became one of the few soap opera stars to make the transition from the small screen to the pop music world.

Well, she hasn’t changed that much.

Instead of exploiting her obvious vamp potential, the Mexican singer, now 26, has the same smile, the same innocence and the same good-girl, clean-cut stance. And, just in case, she has a voice.

Her concert Saturday at the Universal Amphitheatre was a carefully choreographed show by an above-average singer who could be taken more seriously if she didn’t try so hard to keep her crown as Queen of the Middle of the Road.

Her vocal capabilities are wasted on a standard mix of mild rockers, nonthreatening funky pop and predictable romantic ballads that make you feel that the old Lucerito is still there trying to get out. During her ranchera set--backed by Mariachi Sol de Mexico, which also plays on her new album--Lucero left no doubt as to her status as a bona fide singer and a versatile performer who has no problems taking over the stage.

But just like Lucerito--who acted well in a series of unoriginal tear-jerkers--Lucero seems happy enough just showing that she can sing and dance--even if the music is not that important.
