City Council to Meet Residents at College

Share

In an attempt to increase community access to government and decentralize power, the Los Angeles City Council will meet Tuesday at Mission College to address topics of interest in the northeast San Fernando Valley.

“This meeting is an excellent opportunity for people who can’t seem to get [to council meetings] downtown to participate in city government,” said Councilman Richard Alarcon, who represents the area.

Among the items on the agenda will be appropriations for signs, hitching posts and other equestrian amenities at the Hansen Dam Recreation Area; motions about a potential land purchase for the construction of an Environmental Awareness Center, and a request to rename the Lopez Canyon Landfill, now closed, to the Lopez Canyon Restoration Project.

Before the meeting, Alarcon’s office will host a free continental breakfast of muffins, coffee, juice and fruit prepared by Mission College culinary students. The money for the meal will come from Alarcon’s officeholder account, which is funded by private contributions and intended to cover the cost of running for or holding office.

Alarcon’s office also arranged for an on-site City Government Fair, with representatives from the police, fire, parks, street maintenance, library and other departments on hand to answer citizens’ questions.

The breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. and the City Council meeting will start at 10 at the Mission College Campus Center, 13356 Eldridge Ave., Sylmar.
