Four U.S. Border Patrol agents were injured during their Sunday morning briefing when several rounds of ammunition went off in a bag lying at one agent’s feet.

The incident occurred about 7 a.m. at Brown Field Station, near the San Ysidro port of entry on the U.S.-Mexican border, said Ron Henley, supervisory Border Patrol agent.

About 40 agents were being briefed at the time, he said.

“Evidently, a couple of rounds of ammunition . . . in one of the equipment bags went off, and the shrapnel injured four agents,” he said.

All four were treated at a hospital for superficial wounds and were expected to be released.

Equipment bags contain an agent’s radio, flashlight, binoculars and other equipment.

The incident was under investigation, Henley said.
