Rondell White Set to Return to Expos

Montreal Expo center fielder Rondell White, sidelined since April 27 because of a bruised spleen and bruised kidney injured making a diving catch, will return from the disabled list today or Tuesday.

On Sunday, a fan sitting behind the Expos’ dugout during their game against the Phillies in Montreal was struck on the back of the head when Henry Rodriguez’s bat sailed into the stands after a swing. He was unhurt.

Detroit Tiger shortstop Alan Trammell was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 6, because of a strained left ankle. Shortstop Fausto Cruz was called up from Triple-A Toledo.

The Athletics purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Dave Telgheder from Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League and optioned right-handed reliever Jay Witasick to Huntsville of the Southern League. Telgheder is scheduled to start tonight’s home game against Seattle. . . . The Colorado Rockies optioned outfielder Trenidad Hubbard to Triple A Colorado Springs and called up former replacement player Angel Echevarria, who was hitting .332 with 14 homers and 66 RBIs in Colorado Springs. . . . The Rockies have stolen home seven times in their four-year history, with three of the thefts coming this year. . . . The St. Louis Cardinals had to replace half of their starting infield because of injuries during Sunday’s game against the Cubs. Third baseman Gary Gaetti left in the third inning because of stiffness in his lower back, and second baseman Luis Alicea departed in the fifth because of a strained groin muscle. Manager Tony La Russa said Gaetti should be fine but said he wouldn’t know about Alicea’s status for a day or two.
