Council Hearing Set on Overpass Project

Oxnard residents will have the opportunity today to air their concerns about or support for the proposed Rose Avenue overpass, which is scheduled to begin construction by February.

The Oxnard City Council will hold a public hearing at tonight’s meeting to hear input on the proposed construction from residents and business owners.

The bridge, which will be expanded from the current two lanes to six, will cost an estimated $16.6 million.

Business and land owners in the existing assessment district that surrounds the bridge will be asked to pay nearly 62% of the construction costs while the city of Oxnard will foot nearly 40% of the bill.

“Nobody is happy about the costs,” said Jim Fabian, debt administrator for the city of Oxnard. “But there is a recognition of the need to improve the [bridge].”

In the past, residents have complained that the existing two-lane overpass is too small, thus causing bottlenecks, and is dangerous for children to cross.

Today’s hearing is set for 7 p.m. in City Council chambers.
