City to Get $1.1 Million for Park and Roads

The city will get $1.1 million for recreational facilities and roads under an agreement between the Mission Viejo Co. and the City Council.

In a closed session Monday night, the council agreed to accept a cash settlement instead of requiring the company to build an 11-acre park at Olympiad Road and Alicia Parkway.

The company made a commitment in 1987 to build the park as part of a development agreement for the planned community of Mission Viejo.

The city will develop Olympic Park, spending about $825,000 of the settlement money to build a soccer field and a baseball diamond for youth leagues.

The remaining $275,000 will be used for street improvements near a proposed apartment complex off Crown Valley Parkway.

“Under terms of the agreement, we’ll get the money by September,” Assistant City Manager Dennis Wilberg said. “We can then build the park that people around there have been waiting for for many, many years.”

Separately, the council also approved plans for the Mission Viejo Co. to widen El Toro Road north of Marguerite Parkway to accommodate a planned apartment complex.
