A Big Crowd Is Pleasing but the Dodgers Aren’t

The Dodgers drew their 100 millionth fan in Los Angeles on Tuesday and their 70 millionth to leave early. . . .
This time the mass exodus that began after the sixth inning was totally warranted. . . .
Many of the thousands of Little Leaguers who came dressed in uniform could have done a better job against the San Diego Padres than the sleep walkers in white and blue who were masquerading as major leaguers. . . .
The fans deserve more of a bang for their buck than they’ve been getting lately. . . .
They have turned out more than 40,000 strong for each of the last five games at Dodger Stadium and for seven of the 10 on the homestand. . . .
They no longer set single-season major league attendance marks, but will reach the three-million plateau for a record 11th time. . . .
That is, unless the Dodgers keep repeating Tuesday’s no-pitch, no-field, no-hit performance. . . .
The two most emotional moments at Dodger Stadium this season have been the homecoming introductions of Tom Lasorda and Brett Butler. . . .
Like politicians, managers rarely are cheered, but Lasorda got a standing ovation on Monday night that brought tears to his eyes. . . .
“No doctor could have given me any better medicine,” Lasorda said. . . .
Eric Young is having a terrific season with the Colorado Rockies, but hardly seemed to be an all-star second baseman of the future when the Dodgers chose not to protect him in the expansion draft of 1993. . . .
In 132 at-bats for the Dodgers in 1992, Young batted .258 with a homer and 11 runs batted in. His fielding was worse. In 42 games, he committed nine errors. . . .
It’s OK with me if Davey Johnson puts Cal Ripken anywhere except on the bench. . . .
The All-Star game ball had the Liberty Bell on it, but no commissioner’s signature. . . .
If Michael Irvin isn’t hit with at least a four-game suspension by the NFL, he will be getting off easily and all the wrong messages will be sent out again. . . .
Is this the year that Oakland Raider wide receiver-kick returner Rocket Ismail finally fulfills his potential? . . .
The St. Louis Rams are practicing at Western Illinois University in Macomb. The Los Angeles Rams’ first practice site was Compton College in 1946. . . .
On the Rams’ depth chart, Lawrence Phillips is listed as second-string running back behind ex-Raider Greg Robinson. . . .
Need a football fix? Last year’s top high school seniors from California and Texas will play in the Shrine All-Star Classic at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cal State Fullerton. . . .
Hunch players parlay today at Hollywood Park: Touchdown Miami in the first race to Touchdownsandiego in the fifth. . . .
Corey Nakatani calls Serena’s Song the best horse he has ever ridden, but will try to beat her aboard Jewel Princess in the Vanity on Sunday. . . .
Irv Kaze, the KIEV talk show host and longtime publicist, will teach a sports public relations class on July 27, July 31, Aug. 7 and Aug. 14 at UCLA. For information, call (310) 825-0641. . . .
Remember when the British were so prominent in the men’s middle-distance running events at the Olympics? Even an expert such as track and field promoter Al Franken can’t name a contender from the Isles this year. . . .
Roy Jones, the super-middleweight boxing champion, will play point guard for the East Stars today against Foot Locker at 12:15 p.m. in the Summer Pro League at the Long Beach Pyramid. . . .
The NBA off-season is more interesting than the season. . . .
Not only free agent signings galore, but trades and contract extensions too. . . .
Houston got the biggest bargain when it extended Hakeem Olajuwon’s contract for five years at $11 million per. . . .
Washington had to do something after losing Juwan Howard, but sending young Rasheed Wallace and Mitchell Butler to Portland for troublemaker Rod Strickland and Harvey Grant was a gamble. . . .
Atlanta should be happy that it got two first-round draft picks and, much less important, two second rounders from Detroit for Stacey Augmon and Grant Long. . . .
So when are the Clippers going to sign a free agent?
