Faced with the prospect of 800 new students this fall and an additional 1,000 next year, the Anaheim City School District opened a new campus last week that officials said will help ease a pressing demand for classroom space.

Thomas Jefferson II School, at Vermont Avenue and Olive Street, will accommodate as many as 1,100 students in kindergarten through sixth grade by maintaining a year-round schedule.

Jefferson II is the first school that the district has built since 1967. Districtwide, enrollment has increased by 7,000 students in the past decade.

The $2.4-million facility consists of 10 portable classrooms on lease from the state and two permanent buildings. Funding was provided by the city’s Redevelopment Agency, federal Community Development Block Grants and the elementary school district.

To make more efficient use of the 12-acre property, officials said, children attending Jefferson II will share a play field with students at the adjacent Jefferson I school.

The principal of Jefferson II is Ruth Sorenson, a district employee for 26 years who was previously the principal at Lincoln School.
